Physiotherapy Service including sports injuries

The physiotherapy department at St Cyril's offers out-patient services for a range of disorders of the central nervous system, using theories and evidence based practice, relating to the Bobath concept of rehabilitation. Neurological disorders commonly seen include: Stroke, Spinal cord injury, Acquired Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinsons Disease, neurodegenerative disorders, neuromuscular disorders, general spasticity management, chronic pain management, chronic fatigue syndrome. Any other condition affecting the central nervous system can be treated, subject to an assessment.

Treatment and intervention will involve setting appropriate goals with each patient. We aim to agree on realistic and achievable targets, to engender further progress in the rehabilitation process. Outcomes will not only be dependent on the therapeutic input, but the extent/stage of the pathology or deterioration of the condition. The physiotherapy intervention will be designed to maximize the potential of the individual concerned.

We treat physical impairments, relating to a condition of the central nervous system, including:

  • Patients who did not required in-patient treatment but still experience reduced movement abilities
  • Continuation of rehabilitation following discharge from hospital
  • Patients currently receiving out-patient rehabilitation who wish to increase the frequency of treatment
  • Patients with long standing conditions reducing quality of life.

Consultation time is offered by a qualified professional physiotherapist to all patients to discuss, question and evaluate each individual condition, and offer solutions or guidance to possible external influences relating to their condition.
