ABI Medium Secure Services

St Mary's provides medium secure beds for patients with Acquired Brain Injuries detained under the Mental Health Act, offering cognitive rehabilitation programmes using the Giles-Clarke model of neurorehabilitation, as adapted by Rogers J (2006) for a forensic and secure population.

We offer specific therapeutic therapies if and as appropriate. Including:

  • Therapeutic group treatment
  • Breakfast group
  • Substance misuse treatment,
  • Brain Injury Awareness Group,
  • Hostility reduction group,
  • Social skills training,
  • Relaxation training*

*all of the above can be facilitated in group or 1:1 sessions dependent on need

All patients have compensatory systems in place to ensure they are prepared for the day ahead of them, which alleviates many difficulties this patient group has with planning, organising and sequencing activities.

Within Medium Secure services we are constantly developing a consistent Care Pathway that provides a structured process to ensure the delivery of high quality care and evidence-based practice throughout the Medium Secure service. Our aim is to increase patients tolerance of others in order that they present themselves as well as they possibly can: at this point low security can be considered if successful group work has been completed.
