Low Secure ServicesABI Low Secure ServiceSt Mary's provides low secure beds for patients with an Acquired Brain Injury detained under the Mental Health Act, offering cognitive rehabilitation programmes using the Giles-Clarke model of neurorehabilitation, as adapted by Rogers J (2006) for secure and forensic populations. Patients are admitted to low secure, following a detailed pre admission assessment and patients are referred from courts, prisons and other secure and open hospitals and may also be transferred from Medium secure unit's (M.S.U) including St Mary's Hospital as part of the Care Pathway to a less restrictive environment. Enhanced Care Programme Approach (CPA) meetings are held every 6 months to review progress and plan for future step down services if appropriate, new admissions have a CPA following the initial 12 week assessment period, following which a detailed Care Plan is set out. We offer specific therapeutic therapies if and as appropriate. Including:

It is well researched that Deaf patients are detained in inappropriate levels of security for considerably longer periods of time than hearing patients, making the transition from high or medium secure care extremely problematic due to lack of appropriate services. We provide a range of treatments and therapies in a culturally and linguistically approachable milieu. The service provides specialist rehabilitative care in Medium Security. All therapeutic services are delivered in British Sign Language and there is an expectation that staff will use BSL, to the best of their ability, at all times. The employment of Deaf staff is vital to the quality and development of the service and adds substantially to the therapeutic milieu, ensuring services remain focused around the developmental and communication needs of Deaf people. Referrals are accepted from courts, prisons, other hospitals and community placements. Patients will also be transferred from Medium Secure services at St Mary's Hospital. All patients will be detained under the Mental Health Act (1983) and will be placed following a detailed pre-admission assessment and risk management plan |
